Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain de Caestecker, stars of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,” lend their voices to an all-new “Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man vs. The Sinister 6”! Read more about their experiences in the interview below and tune in to the episode this Sunday at 9:00 AM ET on Disney XD.
Marvel.com: So what brings Fitz and Simmons to “Ultimate Spider-Man”? Why’d you guys swing by?
Elizabeth Henstridge: Well, we’re all in the Marvel family. Fitz-Simmons are part of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and Spider-Man is in the Marvel Universe. [Marvel] approached us asking if we’d like to be a part of [“Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man vs. The Sinister 6] and we both jumped on board — the thought of having Fitz-Simmons as cute cartoon characters is just too much to resist. So we came down and we just had a great time playing around with the dialogue.
Marvel.com: Being in the Marvel family means you get to see different versions of your character in the animated series, as well as in the comic book.
Iain De Caestecker: That’s my favorite one.
Marvel.com: Your favorite version of yourself is the comic book version?
Iain De Caestecker: Yeah, because they gave me a monkey. And in the comic version they made me really muscley, which is nice.
Marvel.com: Are you saying you’re not as buff as your comic book counterpart?
Iain De Caestecker: No, I’m buffer. It’s just nice seeing skinnier versions.
Marvel.com: Yeah, like if you took a break.
Iain De Caestecker: Yeah, exactly. I just think I went a bit [over-the-top] with it.
Marvel.com: People can’t see Iain right now, but he can’t put his arms down because his muscles are so big. But back to Spider-Man, do you think he’d make a good recruit for S.H.I.E.L.D.?
Elizabeth Henstridge: He’d make a great Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.! He’s loyal, he’s intelligent, compassionate and works well in a team. I feel like he is a good leader, so he might butt heads with Coulson at times because right now Coulson is our leader. I’d take Spider-Man through some initiation training.
Iain De Caestecker: No. He’d be so much better than all of us.
Marvel.com: So you’re intimidated, sounds like.
Iain De Caestecker: Yeah, I can’t compete with him. But what if Fitz was Spider-Man? Or I could be, and this is what it’s all been geared up to: Monkey-Man. I could do all the things. Think about the song — “Monkey-Man, Monkey-Man, can’t do all the things Spider-Man can, but I’m a Monkey.” I can just swing.
Marvel.com: Drop lots of banana peels to make the bad guys slip and fall.
Iain De Caestecker: Exactly.
Marvel.com: Elizabeth, would you ever replace Fitz with Spider-Man?
Elizabeth Henstridge: [gasps]
Marvel.com: Iain’s not listening right now, so you can speak freely. Agents Fitz & Simmons in ‘Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man vs. The Sinister 6’
Elizabeth Henstridge: I think the answer has to be no. I think Simmons would toy with the idea and perhaps threaten the idea, but she is not herself without Fitz.
Marvel.com: What was your reaction when you first saw what your animated version would look like?
Elizabeth Henstridge: It was so cool to first see Simmons as an animated little thing! It’s just crazy because you don’t — it’s not something you ever think about. As Simmons, I like her outfits to be cute and make sense. I love working with Ann Foley, our costume designer, and I think she’s so talented. I approach [the character] from the inside out, so to see other people’s perception of her and see what outfit personifies her, that whole process is just so cool. And just to see a character that you play come to life as a cartoon character — it’s just so cool. It’s a very out of body, literally, experience.
Iain De Caestecker: It was cool. It was weird, nobody should ever have to see that, should they? Really. It’s not a normal thing.
Marvel.com: Your version personally or no one should ever have to see what they look like animated?
Iain De Caestecker: Both. Mine especially. It’s not like a normal thing. It’s not like, “Oh, you’re an adult now. Here’s your animated version of yourself!” It’s not normal, but that’s why it’s so cool.
Marvel.com: And lastly, Spidey is involved in S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, so what subject do you think your character would excel in at the Academy? What do you think you would get straight-A’s in?
Elizabeth Henstridge: I think she would get straight-A’s in everything. She would make it so. I think she’d do the best in Chemistry, in making up potions and mixing different things, because she likes to be a bit messy and to just experiment — dump a whole load into a jar and shake it up and see what she gets. She’s quite fun in that way. I don’t know how well she would do in any class that’s sort of like silent learning, because she does like to talk. So maybe she’d get an A-minus in that one.
Iain De Caestecker: Chemical engineering and computers.
Marvel.com: You would probably fail Psychology?
Iain De Caestecker: Oh yeah. One hundred percent, I would fail Psychology. I’d just get angry and throw books or something.
